PeaceWhat Gives You Peace?

What gives you peace? This was a question one of my teachers asked me many, many years ago. At the time, I remember thinking that this was a profound question and that I didn’t know the answer. What I did know was that I didn’t have much peace. The question started me on a quest of sorts, the destination of which was to discover the many causes and contributors to my inner peace.

The expression “Make your peace” means: “To regain friendly relations, become reconciled or gain acceptance”. Reconciled means: “To bring into harmony”.

I love this, because so often our lack of inner peace comes from the fact that we do not have “friendly relations” with ourselves, our past, our present, our lives, the people in our lives, or even LIFE itself. How fitting it in, then, that to create inner peace, we begin a process of coming into harmony with those very things.

panic-calmOur Experiences Impact our Peace!

Two of the main causes of trauma, or traumatic experiences, are the feelings of helplessness and the feelings of being shattered. How often in life do we witness or experience things we cannot stop or prevent? We try to help people, but they keep hurting themselves. We try to get out of difficult situations, but it seems like we face one set-back after another. We witness, or hear of, injustices that we can do nothing about. What is worse, is that we were often told, or believe, these thing we are wrong, and people shouldn’t do that to each other—yet these bad things are happening. People ARE doing them to each other. We fall into inner conflict and turmoil whenever our beliefs about ourselves, others or how the world works are challenged, do not hold up, or are shattered.

The Many Ways Our Peace is Disrupted

Four Aspects of Self

Humans are complex beings made up of many parts. A simple categorization of these aspects is: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. The types of disruptions can be grouped into these four aspects.

12207239572126714289brain sections.svg.med1. The Mental Aspect of Self

Our Mental Aspect of Self is anything that makes up the “Mind”. It is linked to our knowledge, wisdom, perceptions, beliefs, values, reasoning and problem-solving skills. It is anything you would associate with the head, rather than the heart. When the Mental Aspect is disrupted, we come to doubt how we think about the world, and our ability to discern what is real, and our understanding of what is “true”. When we question what we believe about how the world works, our understanding of how to navigate life, our sense of right and wrong and reality, are impacted. We no longer know how to think, how to determine what is good, or how to guide and direct our behaviour. We don’t know how to determine what exists and what is make-believe. The types of disruptions of the Mental Aspect can include: The Shattering of Beliefs; The Shattering of our Illusions/Perceptions; and The Shattering of Justice/Fairness. When the Mental is disrupted, it creates a disillusionment with Life and the world around us.

heart2. The Emotional Aspect of Self

Our Emotional Aspect of Self is anything that makes up the “Heart”. It is linked to our sense of connection with Life, ourselves and others. The Emotional Aspect is our feelings, emotions, connection, ability to bond, relationships (with Life, Self and Others), and perhaps, most importantly, it guides our opinions of ourselves. This aspect of self houses our inner child, the part of us that believes in the goodness in the world. When we question the goodness in ourselves, others and the World, we cannot bond or connect because connection would cause pain. We no longer know what or how to feel, what is true for us, and we forget how to be carefree. We stop following our joy, lose our sense of play, and can no longer hear our own inner knowing. The types of disruptions in the Emotional Aspect of Self can include: The Shattering of Innocence; The Shattering of Trust; The Shattering of Dreams/Hopes; The Shattering of Self-Concepts/Perceptions; The Shattering of Self-Respect/Self-Esteem; The Shattering of Love (Broken-heartedness); and The Shattering of (our illusions about) Others. When the Emotional Aspect is disrupted, it creates disconnection, dissonance, and a sense of separation. We become out of harmony with ourselves, others and Life.

3. TJogging-Womanhe Physical Aspect of Self

Our Physical Aspect of Self is anything that makes up the “Physical World”. This can be our physical body, health, career, income, home or physical environment. It is linked to our sense of safety and our ability to meet our own needs and take care of ourselves and our families. This aspect of self governs our vitality and our prowess. It is the part of us that is focused on being competent and achieving. It is the part of us that “does” in the world. When we question our ability to impact the physical world, to survive, and to meet our needs, the world becomes a dangerous place. When the Physical Aspect is disrupted, it impacts our sense of safety. We fear for our survival. The world becomes unsafe, dangerous, and something to be feared. We no longer know what to do or how to do it. We lose sight of our skills, abilities, talents and attributes. Anxiety can take hold. The types of disruptions of the Physical Aspect of Self can include: The Shattering of Independence; The Shattering of Physical Safety; The Shattering of Health; The Shattering of Personal Power/Self-Determination; The Shattering of Influence; The Shattering of Our Personal Boundaries; The Shattering of Rights and Freedoms; The Shattering of Wealth/Ability to Provide; and The Shattering of Comfort/The Familiar/Life as We Know it. When the Physical Aspect is disrupted, it creates a sense of helplessness, desperation or hopelessness.

nature-clip-art-clipart4. The Spiritual Aspect of Self

Our Spiritual Aspect of Self is anything that makes up the “Soul” or the “Spirit”. It is linked to the deepest part of who we are. While the Spiritual Aspect does include our spiritual practice, faith, and beliefs in things greater than ourselves, it is also our joy, passion, creative expression and our connection with Life. The Spiritual Aspect is our inner fire, longings, dreams, and the irrational desire we have to do/learn/become something specific that defies logic and goes beyond the expression of language. This aspect of self guides us in the direction of our “calling”. It teaches us how to go beyond ourselves, explore the unknown, and express our uniqueness and gifts. This is the aspect of self that believes in something greater than ourselves and desires to be part of creating that greater something. When we question our place in the greater order, we feel adrift, lost, misunderstood and even meaningless. We no longer fit in the World, and the World seems pointless, shallow, and empty. The types of disruptions of the Spiritual Aspect of Self can include: The Shattering of Faith; The Shattering of Purpose/Value/Meaning; The Shattering of Our Way of Being; and The Shattering of Our Greatness. When the Spiritual Aspect is disrupted, it creates a rejection of Life. The system begins to shut down. There is no purpose, we lose the will to continue, and we can even experience despair.

ID-100260657How do we Reclaim our Peace?

Maybe as you read the above descriptions you recognized some of the disruptions or shatterings that had occurred in your own life. You might be asking, “So, Renate, this is great but what do we DO about it? How do we fix it?”

I am glad you asked because that is EXACTLY what the FREE 30 Day Inner Peace Challenge™ seeks to do. Each day we will work with a different type of disruption and explore ways to create harmony!

5 minsHow Does it Work?

It is simple. It takes 5 minutes per day—for 30 days. Is your peace worth that little? Every morning you will receive an email. That email contains your “Daily Peace Sign”. Your Daily Peace Sign will contain a 2-3 minute video with a 2-3 paragraph note. The video & note contain an idea, thought or invite that you can use to restore your inner peace. Just a small “sound-bite” of information daily. At the end of the 30 days, you will be amazed how much has been restored!

webpagepicMy Story

In my 20s, I struggled with clinical depression so severely that I could not lift the chairs around my dining room table. My low self-esteem and high self-loathing played a huge role in this depression. After all, it’s hard to be happy when you hate yourself. It is safe to say I was filled with inner conflict. I had no idea what inner peace was!

The medical model of medication and talk therapy was not effective for me. The anti-depressants didn’t agree with my system. Talk therapy helped me feel better in the moment, but didn’t actually heal the depression. (This model does work well for many people, and if you are one of those people, I am very glad for you! The 30 Day Inner Peace Challenge™ is compatible with most modalities and treatments.) In my case, that lack of success with traditional approaches started me on a journey to find other modalities that would help me create wellness.

The three modalities that worked best for me are: the personal development movement, transformational coaching, and hypnosis. While these approaches are not in any way a replacement for medical support, they are wonderful complimentary approaches that can be used to support traditional treatments. Which is why, I became certified in them and use these tools to help others! I am now 17 years medication and depression free!
